Things to Consider Before Adopting

Why do you want a pet?

It is essential to ask yourself this important question before you get a pet! Some animals may be with you 10, 15, or even 20 years which is why it so important to consider the long term commitment.

Are you considering the best pet for your lifestyle?

You must consider where you are in your life, and which type of pet would fit best with your lifestyle and financial situation. Do you have small children?  Are you a student?  Do you have allergies?  Do you have friends with animals?  Is your household active or more laid back? DO you travel a lot?

Considering all of the aspects when choosing a pet will help ensure long lasting happiness for both you and your animals.

Do you have time for a pet?

Dogs, cats, and other animal companions require food, water, exercise, care, enrichment, and companionship every day of every year.

Can you afford a pet?

The costs of pet ownership will vary from pet to pet, but proper animal care comes with a significant cost. Some things you may want to consider are veterinary care, food, pet insurance, licenses, training (if needed), grooming, toys, litter, accessories, etc. These costs are present for their whole life!

Are your living arrangements suitable for the animal you have in mind?

Choose an animal that you can properly accommodate within your living arrangements. You should consider species, size, and energy level of the pet that would be the ideal fit for your home. A pet's needs are as important as yours and owners should be advocating for their best interest.

Many rental homes do not allow pets or have restrictions. Make sure you know the rules of your rental agreement before you bring a pet home.
